Project Number 159: One Pacific Hotel – Hennessy Wing

We repurpose this 1980s motel to a serviced residence. Totally different from what we’re used to in the Philippines, this building in insular US has absolutely no columns and beams; and was constructed with load bearing walls all through out. Re-design was quite difficult – and is an understatement.

We had our work cut out for us.

What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?

What would we do if we weren’t afraid?

We would stake our hope, with unequivocal zeal, on a government that will leave no one behind.

We would wager our future, with unmistakable confidence, on an administration that will always seek better ways of doing things.

We denounce and reject any attempt to deform our future with lies, incompetence and corruption.

We empathize with our tired nation as we too yearn for a leadership of truth, competence and transparency in the service of the last, the least and the lost.

And we pray that God grants the Filipino people victory.

May He permit a Robredo presidency.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

Gerry Torres, co-founder of the Benilde Architecture Program, and former dean of the CSB School of Design and Arts gives clarity to the debate on the authentic value of Lacaton and Vassal’s “architecture of kindness”. Other guests are Choie Funk, Buck Richnold Sia, Nana Cabales and Myk Sanchez.

With Whiskey In Rye is a Manila based podcast produced by JDSM Media, and airs monthly new topics relating to Philippine and Asian architecture, design, art, the creatives, their politics and its influence on local society and culture. Everyone is required to have their own poison and hold it with courage and grace until the discussions end. Some, interestingly, let their poison hold them instead, and the results are, to describe it mildly, a riot.

With Whiskey In Rye, EP01 SEG03 Myk Sanchez Reaction on Lacaton and Vassal Pritzker Win & Nana’s Hat

Project Number 61: Puerto Princesa Exposition Center for Natural History Revisited

During the tenure of former mayor Edward S. Hagedorn, JDSM was commissioned to do a study to make the Baywalk area of the city useful for public good. The concept was to not sequester usable open park space of the people by planting a structure that will mar the view, and limit leisurely mobility; hence, the decision to use the roof as a park and let the public climb the slow ascent of the center and view Honda Bay from that perch. The goal is to make the building as “invisible” as possible. The project portfolio was crafted under the PPP system of the national government back then. While the project was not constructed as the administrations changed during the previous elections, it remains on the table as a viable public engagement solution for the city.

When the pandemic is finished, and a new way of living is demanded of us, we would see the value of urban open space in our collective well being.

Project Number 118: Dela Salle College of Saint Benilde Manila Master Plan Revisited

In 2015, JDSM, under the consortium with 9 other design professionals called BADC (Benilde Architecture + Design Consortium) was commissioned by the college to chart a 30 year development master plan. Taking the concept of an open campus unique to CSB Manila where all buildings are distributed within a residential district across a contiguous area of about 75 hectares, the master plan engages participatory development with the host community of Malate. Since 2017, three new buildings have been constructed according to this plan namely the Garrucho-HIFI Campus, designed by JDSM; the Sports Complex and the AB4 Campus.

As a side note, JDSM managing principal Joseph AdG Javier was one of the co-founders of BENARCH (formerly SDAAR), the Architecture Program of the School of Design and Arts, and has taught there since 2006.

Project Number 210: Philippine Pavilion at Quanzhou Construction Ready

In collaboration with DTI International, CITEM and Window of East Asia Cultural Park of China, JDSM endorsed the contract documents and confirmed the project for construction. The pavilion, a permanent international trade station of Go Lokal!, a brand managed by DTI to promote Philippine products for international distribution, will occupy approximately 300 square meters. The global pandemic deferred construction work until its resumption in the next few months once reciprocal air travel between the Philippines and China is established with more stability. We look forward to this project’s completion with our collaboration with our Chinese counterparts. More content about this project in the next posts.

Project Number 158: DLS-CSB Manila Garrucho-HIFI Campus Inaugurated

The Garrucho-HIFI Campus of the Dela Salle College of Saint Benilde Manila was inaugurated last 24 May 2019, with the former president of the college Bro. Dennis Magbanua leading the ceremonies with the benefactor Peter D. Garrucho, for whom the building is named after. Various innovative facilities for enterprise incubation are provided in the building, designed within the framework of Design Thinking. The COVID19 pandemic rendered all the campuses of the college under shut down until the health climate is more permissive. We look forward to using this unique space again. More content about this project in posts to come.

Project Number 64: Polylite Industrial Corporation Ground Breaking Ceremonies

Project Number 40: Fahrenheit House Visualised

This is the firm’s first off shore account. Located in the upscale district of Mid-Levels, Hong Kong, in the very prestigious Grenville House, this 300 square meter condominium unit has  a full service demonstration-grade kitchen, dining and living halls, powder room, den, two standard bed room suites and a master suite. The design style is Techno Sino-Indian Modern with heavy take-off emphasis on the Indian roots of the owners.

Of a different concept of luxury, opposed to the South East Asian clean and matte, this project takes the opposite direction and goes glossy luxurious, which is in order in cold sub-tropical East Asian cities such as Hong Kong.

Materials are rear coated glass, real and faux leather, stainless steel, Chinese Maple in charcoal silverised oil stain, agglomerated stone and poly-urethane paint. Kitchen is in rear coated glass on high density fiber board with resin counter top, all by Kitench, Incorported. Back Ground Music – Public Address (BGM-PA) System is by Bose, and selected furniture pieces are by Fendi, Vitra, Giorgetti and Kenneth Cobonpue. Prominent furniture pieces are designed by the firm’s principal, Joseph Javier. The project completed summer of 2010.

Design team members are RCBautista (EE), and CLMadriaga (SE).
